This is the flagship event of MIT’s Sports Lab. It brings together a curated group of doers - those in industry and academia who have big visions and are on the forefront of their disciplines. It is an opportunity for all of our affiliates, supporters, and members of the MIT community to come to campus and share advances, challenges and passions that lie at the intersection of engineering and sports.
About the MIT Sports Lab
The MIT Sports Lab is dedicated to building an interconnected community of faculty, students, industry partners, alums, and athletes who are passionate about tackling challenges that lie at the intersection of engineering and sports. The program links the expertise of MIT faculty; the unique resources of MIT’s facilities; the passion of MIT students; and the needs, experience and insight of industry partners.
2019 Faculty Leadership
Christina Chase
Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering, MIT; Co-founder & Managing Director, MIT Sports Lab Christina Chase is a Lecturer at MIT in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 2015, she co-founded the MIT Sports Lab with Prof. Anette “Peko” Hosoi and serves as its Managing Director. Prior to this she was the first Entrepreneur in Residence at MIT through the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship. Christina has helped hundreds of teams go from concept to company. In 2013, she was named one of the 25 Most Influential Women in the Boston Tech Community and in 2014, Mashable named her one of the 15 People Shaping Boston’s Tech Scene. In a past life, Christina was a cyclist where she was one of 12 women selected by the US Cycling Federation to train at the US Olympic Training Center. She has taught downhill skiing in Colorado, summited six of Colorado’s 14-ers across seasons, and her latest sport is kiteboarding. Christina is a Techstars mentor and serves on the Board of the MIT Enterprise Forum, is a judge for the SXSW Accelerator Competition and former Advisory Board member. |
Professor Anette (Peko) Hosoi
Associate Dean, School of Engineering; Neil and Jane Pappalardo Professor, Mechanical Engineering, MIT; Co-founder, MIT Sports Lab Anette “Peko” Hosoi is the Associate Dean of the MIT School of Engineering, the Neil and Jane Pappalardo Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Mathematics. Her research contributions lie at the junction of nonlinear hydrodynamics, biomechanics, and bio-inspired design. A common theme in her work is the fundamental study of shape, kinematic, and rheological optimization of biological systems with applications to the emergent field of soft robotics. More recently, she has turned her attention to problems that lie intersection of biomechanics, applied mathematics, and sports. She is the co-founder of the MIT Sports Lab which connects the MIT community with pro-teams and industry partners to address data and engineering challenges that lie within the sports domain. She has received numerous awards including the APS Stanley Corrsin Award, the Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Jacob P. Den Hartog Distinguished Educator Award. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), a Radcliffe Institute Fellow, and a MacVicar Faculty Fellow. |
2019 Student Leadership
Seung Kyun (SK) Ha Co-Lead & Speaker Mangagement, Chemical Engineering, Graduate Student SK is a graduate student studying Chemical Engineering at MIT and his research involves synthesis and applications of semiconductor nanocrystals. Originally from South Korea, he holds a B.S. in Chemical and Biological Engineering and a minor in Physics from Seoul National University. He enjoys working on sports data analytics projects in his spare time, including building a mathematical model that describes soccer dribble dynamics. He enjoys playing all sports, especially soccer, and holds U.S. Soccer grassroots coaching license. |
Kevin Lyons Website & Co-Lead, Computer Science, Senior Kevin Lyons is a senior at MIT studying Computer Science. He has a passion for working on software products and analytics that have immediate and clear user impact. In the past, he was worked as a Software Engineer for the New England Patriots and Uber. He is also a member of the MIT varsity football team where he plays outside linebacker. |
Sarah Fay Faculty Management Lead, Mechanical Engineering, Graduate Student Sarah is currently a graduate student working with Peko Hosoi. Her current project is about the modeling the biomechanics of running, and in the past, she's worked on optimizing racket weight distribution for power hitting. She played field hockey and squash at MIT as an undergraduate and is now an assistant coach of the MIT field hockey team. |
Charlotte Folinus Lab Tour Lead, Mechanical Engineering, Senior Charlotte is a senior studying Mechanical Engineering at MIT. She is passionate about using mechanical design to create meaningful products for people, and she currently works with Peko Hosoi on non-destructive stiffness testing of soft materials. She has previously worked on a range of sports projects — everything from running shoes to bike trainers, robotic weight lifting devices, and ski goggles. When she’s not machining, researching, or studying, Charlotte loves to bike, discover new podcasts, explore Boston, and travel. |
Dennis Shen Community Outreach Lead, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Graduate Student Dennis is a graduate student in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department working with Devavrat Shah. His research involves machine learning and high-dimensional statistics with applications to causal inference, time series analysis, and, more recently, sports analytics. Specifically, he is interested in forecasting cricket and NBA player/team performances. During his time at MIT, he has also interned at Facebook Research within the Core Data Science group. |
Audrey Bosquet Marketing & Graphics Lead, Mechanical Engineering, Graduate Student Audrey is currently completing her Master's in Mechanical Engineering with Peko Hosoi. Her research centers around better understanding breast movement and sports bra performance in order to optimize their designs. She has a background in design studied at MIT in the undergraduate architecture program, and also enjoys teaching. In her spare time, she writes about herself in the third person, makes pasta, hikes, and rides bicycles. |
Shea Landeene SWAG Lead, Bioengineering, Senior Shea is an undergraduate Biological Engineer in the MIT class of 2020. She is an active member on campus as the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, member of 2018 MIT Fall Career Fair Committee, and starting middle blocker for the MIT Varsity Volleyball team, among other extracurriculars. Shea prides herself on a diverse skill-set, having worked on projects ranging from mechanical engineering for Adidas, to published research conducted in Australia with the novel application of nanoparticles to cardiovascular disease, to defining new business tactics within the Space Industry in Spain. Shea hopes to progress forward at the intersection of her innovative mindset and passion for sports. |
Sophie Waller Logistics Lead. University of Georgia, Graduate Student Sophie is a second year Ph.D student at the University of Georgia pursuing a degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Pedagogy. She is an active member of the Sport Instruction Research Lab and also serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Basic Physical Education Program. While attending UGA, her research has focused on technology adoption in golf as well as the barriers to adopting technology in Physical Education. Currently, she is attending MIT as a Guest Student and engaging in research that focuses on the adoption of technology in coaching. |
Tianyi Li Tianyi Li, Research Poster Lead, Sloan School of Management, Graduate Student Tianyi (Tim) is currently a graduate student at MIT Sloan School. He has Bachelor’s degrees from Peking University, China, and Masters’ degree from Princeton University. His current research focuses on network control theories and algorithms. Tim is a kickboxing player and long-distance runner in his spare time. He was on the SanShou team at Peking University, and was the president of MIT Kickboxing club on 2018-2019. He was the plank champion at PKU in 2017 and the champion of 2019 Boston Chinese charity 5k Run. |
Jeff Epperson Alumni Event Lead, LGO Program, Graduate Student Jeff Epperson is currently a graduate student in the MIT LGO program, a dual degree with the Sloan School of Management and the MIT Mechanical Engineering Program. Before MIT he graduated from Washington State University with a BS in Chemical Engineering and worked a two different start-up companies as an R&D engineer. The first was at Janicki Bioenergy, a company funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation working on a project to fix sanitation issues in third world countries and the second was at VisionGate, a company developing a non-invasive lung cancer diagnostic instrument. Jeff is a passionate sports fan and moving forward is looking to incorporate his diverse skill set into the things he loves most like basketball, golf, football, and snowboarding into his professional life. |
Albert Gnadt Partner Management Lead, Aeronautics & Astronautics, Graduate Student Albert is a graduate student in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. He is originally from Wisconsin, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He has done research in the areas of gas turbines, electric aircraft, optimization, and machine learning while at MIT. He enjoys playing all sports, especially basketball and skiing. He is the Edgerton House athletics chair and a member of the MIT DAPER Advisory board. |
Saeyoung Rho Information Lead & Marketing, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Graduate Student Saeyoung is a graduate student in the Technology and Policy Program and the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. She is working with Professor Devavrat Shah to develop and apply statistical tools for causal inference and time series prediction. Currently, she is analyzing sports datasets such as NBA and cricket to predict the game scores and player performances. |
Paul Calvetti Startup Showcase Lead, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Sophomore Paul Calvetti is a sophomore at MIT studying Computer Science, Economics, and Data Science. He is interested in using data analytics to come to meaningful conclusions in both finance and sports. He is also a linebacker on the MIT football team. |
Jennifer Beem Student Ambassador Lead, Mechanical Engineering, Graduate Student Jennifer Beem is a Mechanical Engineering masters student working with Peko Hosoi. Her research focuses on inclusivity in sports, specifically looking at developing materials specialized for the female athlete. She has a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and worked for Chevron Phillips in a number of polymer material & application development roles before MIT. In her free time she likes strength training in the gym and gravel riding on the weekends. |
Lukas Brink Partner Management Assistant, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Graduate Student Lukas is a graduate student in the Aeronautics and Astronautics department at MIT, working on new technologies to reduce the environmental impact of aviation. He is originally from the Netherlands and obtained his BSc from Delft University of Technology. Driven by his passion for sports, he plays soccer at MITFC and performs additional research on soccer in collaboration with the MIT Sports Lab |
