Jimmy Buffi Senior Analyst, Pitching Department, Los Angeles Dodgers SPEAKER BIO
Jimmy Buffi is a Senior Analyst for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and their lead pitching researcher. His primary job is to study the biomechanics of pitching, and then to use what he learns to help the coaches and players both improve performance and reduce injury risk. His research areas include the aerodynamics of ball flight (for example, fastball movement vs curveball movement) and the musculoskeletal dynamics of the pitching motion. He has helped many pitchers increase the effectiveness of their pitching deliveries. As part of this work, Jimmy has been responsible for implementing many new technologies into the Dodgers’ organization that help them measure the movement of the human body and the baseball. Since childhood, Jimmy has been enamored with using math and science to improve athletic performance. When he was in little league learning to pitch for the first time, he bought a book on the science of pitching. He used what he learned from the book to become one of the first children his age to throw a curveball. This allowed him to make the little league all-star team and carried him all the way through varsity high school baseball. Jimmy attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate education, where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then attended Northwestern University, where he received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering. His doctoral dissertation was called, “Using Biomechanical Modeling and Simulation to Calculate Potential Muscle Contributions to the Elbow Varus Moment during Baseball Pitching.” He has also been a visiting scholar in the National Center for Simulation in Rehabilitation Research at Stanford University as well as a visiting researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital. When he is not studying math, science, or sports, Jimmy enjoys playing guitar and writing music. |
